On Day 1 of the Kentucky High School State Girls’ Golf Tournament, Barren County freshman Chloe Witcher shot a 14-over 86. That puts her off the pace to have a shot at winning a state title, but she does have a chance to improve on her score on Day 2 of the tournament at Bowling Green Country Club on Wednesday.
Witcher, who also pitches for the Barren County softball team, picked up golf competitively in June of 2022. She played on the Bluegrass Golf Tour, and other junior tours that summer and this past summer. At the end of the 2022 high school golf season, she joined Trojanette teammates Lucy Zalla and Kinsey Edwards in the first round of the state golf tournament.
Those three also made the cut at the Region 3 Tournament and played at Calvert City Country Club this year in the first round of the state tournament. Witcher shot 84 at that event to make the cut to Bowling Green this week.
Headed into Day 2, Witcher is one of nine players tied at 14-over. Keira Yun of Sacred Heart leads after the first round by five strokes. She shot a 5-under 67, while Regan Ramage of Cooper and Trinity Beth of Marshall County were both even-par.
Sacred Heart leads the team scores by 15 strokes with a plus-13 after Day 1. Cooper is second at plus-28. Bowling Green, coached by Barren County graduate Logan Steenbergen, is eighth.
Witcher is scheduled to return to the BGCC course Wednesday at 9 a.m. on Hole 10.
