BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Football quarterback Caden Veltkamp has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Veltkamp had an efficient performance in WKU’s 31-14 win over Sam Houston on Wednesday in Huntsville, Texas, to help his team improve to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in CUSA play. He threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-29 passing, and didn’t throw an interception in the victory. He spread the ball around the offense, with five players catching three passes and two catching a pair of passes. Veltkamp also added 27 yards on the ground, with a 19-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to help pull away for the win.
It was Veltkamp’s third game this season throwing for at least three touchdowns. The rushing touchdown was his fifth of the season and the second straight game he has recorded a rushing touchdown. It was his fourth game this season with at least one passing and one rushing touchdown.
It is the second time this season that Veltkamp has been named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week. He also received the recognition on Sept. 16, after coming off the bench and leading WKU to a 49-21 win at Middle Tennessee.
WKU has now had a player of the week in back-to-back weeks, and the program has a total of five CUSA weekly awards this season. Kicker Lucas Carneiro was named the CUSA Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 14, while defensive back Devonte’ Mathews and punter Cole Maynard received Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the week honors on Sept. 23.
The Hilltoppers are atop the CUSA standings with a 3-0 league record, along with Liberty. Jax State is also unbeaten in CUSA play at 2-0.
WKU will be off this week, before returning to action to face Kennesaw State in a home Black Out game on Wednesday, Oct. 30. Kickoff at Houchens-Smith Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. There will be a free Flo Rida pregame concert on South Lawn starting at 5 p.m. CT.
