Tommy Muse is out as Barren County’s head football coach.
“I don’t know when the exact decision was made, but he was informed yesterday,” said Barren County High School Athletic Director Warren Cunningham.
Muse said he met with the administration Tuesday afternoon and was told he would not be retained as the head football coach. He completed his third season in that role with his team’s first-round playoff loss to McCracken County, 49-27, on Nov. 3.
Muse said he informed the players Wednesday morning and “it was like a funeral” in the room. “It was the hardest thing I had to do.”
“Nobody loves Barren County football more than Tommy Muse,” Cunningham said. “I have great respect for Coach Muse and the tireless effort he has put forth in building the program.”
The athletic director said the hiring process will be open and that the search will be for the person “… who continues to build and continues to push the program forward.”
“It is killing me, but I know it is part of the job,” Muse said. “I wish the best for the kids and for the program.”
Muse got the head coaching job after Kyle Pierce resigned in May of 2021. Pierce had taken the job in March of that year. Muse served his first season under an interim tag. The Trojans were 3-8 that season, which was also a season played under COVID restrictions. Barren did upset Central Hardin, 15-14, in district play.
Muse was the defensive coordinator for 11 years prior to getting the head coaching position. He first started coaching at Barren in 2007. He was previously an assistant coach at Warren Central and Edmonson County.
In his three seasons as the head coach of the Trojans, the program was 12-21, but did finish 2023 at 5-6. One of the wins was via forfeit due to North Hardin using an ineligible player. The Trojans also beat Warren Central in a district contest, which allowed Barren County to host a home playoff game for the first time since 2000.
