William Buford has been informed he will not have his teaching contract renewed, and that he will be out as Glasgow boys’ basketball coach as well.
“They said due to extenuating circumstances, they were going in a different direction,” Buford said Saturday, a day after the job opening was posted on the Glasgow Independent Schools website.
Buford is also a physical education teacher at Glasgow High School. He said his teaching contract continues through the end of the school year.
Buford has been the boys’ head coach for two seasons. The Scotties, despite entering the 2024 postseason with an 8-16 record, won the 15th District Tournament, and won a game in the Fourth Region Tournament for the first time since 2012. His team’s posted a 21-35 record over two seasons.
“I thought I would be straight after winning the district tournament and a game in the region for the first time in 12 years,” Buford said.
“I don’t hold any ill-will against Glasgow,” he said. “Mr. [Principal Joey] Norman is great, too.”
Norman was traveling early Saturday afternoon, and was unavailable for comment. This story will be updated.
Buford said he doesn’t know what is next for him, but “I would still love to coach.”
The online job posting says applications will be accepted through April 5 or until the job is filled.
